Open Water Diver FAQ's
- Q: DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM TO PARTAKE IN THIS CLASS?
- A: Yes. All students are required to complete a watermanship test on the first day of class. The test consists of a 200 meter swim and 10 minute tread in our swimming pool. If you need help on these skills, please check out our swimming lessons!
- Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO CLASS?
- A: Please come prepared to class with your mask, snorkel, booties and fins in hand! Because these items have a unique fit, we recommend showing up at least an hour before class (or in the days leading up to your first class) to get properly fitted for your new equipment...There's nothing worse that will ruin your dive like a leaky mask! Please arrive in comfortable clothes for the academic session and bring a comfortable swimsuit and towel for the pool session to every class.
- Q: ARE THERE ONLINE MATERIALS/PAPERWORK I NEED TO BE AWARE OF BEFORE CLASS BEGINS?
- A: Yes! Upon registration, each student should receive the SSI Open Water Diver online training materials through email - The coursework is mandatory for each student to complete BEFORE the open water "check out" dives take place. These materials can be accessed through the "MySSI" mobile app or through your desktop computer. A completed medical form also needs to be filled out prior to class. The medical statement might require a physicians signature if indicated by the allocated fields. Click here to view the Medical form: SSI Medical Statement
If you have not received online educational materials from SSI, please give our team a call!
- Q: SHOULD I BRING FOOD FOR THE WEEKEND CLASS?
- A: You are welcome to bring your food with you for the hour long lunch break during our weekend classes, although most students drive nearby to grab a bite during that time.
- Q: WHERE ARE MY CHECK OUT DIVES TAKING PLACE?
- A: The open water check out dives usually take place at Windy Point Park on Lake Travis or Spring Lake at Texas State University (San Marcos). Location varies based on availabilty.
Click here to check out Windy Point Park.
Click here to check out Spring Lake.
- Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE LAKE?
- A: Your diving instructor will let you know the preferred dates for picking up your rental gear. You will need: 2 pressure tested tanks for each day, a regulator, a BCD, a computer, a wetsuit and weights. We recommend bringing snacks, plenty of water and sunscreen to make the most of your surface intervals. Please be aware that both diving locations have a daily entry fee. See above links for more details.
